New York würdigt Marathonläufer aus Afrika in Ehrenhalle

New York hat am Donnerstag vier Langstreckler in seine Marathon „Hall of Fame“ aufgenommen. Die neuen Würdenträger sind Haile Gebrselassie (Äthiopien), Tegla Loroupe, Paul Tergat (beide Kenia) und die Britin Paula Radcliffe. Die Ehrenhalle für Läufer aus aller Welt war erst 2011 gegründet worden. Tegla Loroupe (42) wurde bei der Zeremonie im Central Park als Pionierin gefeiert. Sie hatte 1994 als erste Afrikanerin den New Yorker Marathon gewonnen. Loroupe trainierte jahrelang in Deutschland und investierte ihre Preisgelder in Friedensprojekte, darunter ein Internat für Aidswaisen und ehemalige Kindersoldaten im Norden von Kenia nahe der Grenze zu Uganda. dpa

2014 started on a good note. At TLE&PC, we have been so fortunate to be blessed with support from different amazing people. From visitors, volunteers, friends, people fundraising on our behalf, medical officers looking at the welfare of our children, and so much more. We are really fighting Conflict and poverty through education here at TLE&PC and our pupils are a testament to that. They are inquisitive, creative, intelligent and making great strides in their education and Co-curriculum activities.

Highlights of 2014…

We welcomed several new pupils who are now receiving a high-quality education.
We hosted amazing meetings at the school with TLPF team, parents and Ministry of Education.
We have received several visitors from January to date.
The Government Medical team from Kapenguria District Hospital spent one full day assessing the health and wellbeing of our children and gave their recommendations and medical reports.
We planted the vegetable garden to provide vegetables for the school.
We purchased a mini 14 seater van for the TLE&PC, through the support of H.S.H Prince Albert of Monaco.
We completed the school girl’s dormitory.

Tegla Loroupe Education & Peace Centre Medical Camp held in March 2014

TLE&PC’S is lucky to have a passionate and dedicated group of staff, volunteers, friends and supporters who are constantly trying to make a difference in the lives of our children. The West Pokot District Hospital in Kapenguria has now partnered with the TLE&PC to provide frequent medical checks, advice as well as look at the well being of our pupils. The First medical camp was held in March 2014 under the leadership of Ms. Anna Gerloff from Germany. A team of 15 members from different medical departments visited the school and gave personalized checkups and observation to the children. The next medical camp will be held in June 2014.

The School vegetable garden

As a way a balanced diet for our children and suppliment their meals, we have now established a kitchen vegetables garden to support feeding of the children. The children together with the teachers planted cabbages and Kales. In june 2014, we will plant Onions as well as Tomatoes at the school.

Co-Curriculum Activities

Our children have been involved in different extra curriculum such as dramatized dances and singing activities as they prepare to once again participate in the Music Festival interschool competitions.

A day to Remember for the Kids to Kids children – Their Day Out!

The Kids to Kids children were taken to a Day out and a study tour at the Kitale Museum and were later treated to a special dinner prepared at the school, as a way to appreciate their effort and commitment to study despite their past experience.

The children later on received some clothes and pairs of shoes from ON Shoe.

Tegla Loroupe Peace School Report 2013

Infrastructure Development

The Tegla Loroupe Peace school has achieved reasonable infrastructure development. The school has its kitchen refurnished by the installation of a water system, tables and benches to help the students have their meals indoors. The school received a donation of 40 desks and chairs to be used next year by grade 7 students who will soon doing their National Examinations in 2015.

School Activities 2013

The Tegla Peace School participated in the National Music Festival in Nakuru (Kenya) and placed from all the schools in Kenya on 5th place. End of year exams: Most of the pupils have been promoted to the next class. The marks for every pupil has been very encouraging. And also they have worked hard with a good discipline. Let them wish good luck for next year.

In June 2013 our students participated in the county level musical festival performing   Giriama songs, dances & peace poems and qualified to compete in the Provincial music festival competition, date to be announced soon.

Chicken Farm

The chicken poultry farm has been completed and soon the students will begin to eat eggs that will supplement their diet while the surplus would be sold out to generate merger income for the school. All these developments are due to efforts of Mr. Ennio and Gabriella Castagna from Italy. They are a great couple, who love the children of Tegla Peace School greatly. We salute them  for a job well done!

The Girls Dormitory

This facility is almost complete and the school Administration  is looking forward to admit  its first boarders in the year 2014. This will give an enormous advantage  to the gi rls since they will now stay in school  guarded  from  traditional malpractices  such as early marriages ,forced  to female genital mutilation and  family  forced  labour. We will then emback on the boys dormitory  for gender consideration if the finances are available in good time.

School Transport

This remains the most challenging aspect of the Administration at the Tegla Peace School.  The children are still  suffering   coming to school   and going  out each day after learning  in the evenings. Its worsen when the condition of the weather is harsh. The rains are heavy here and most of the children are rained on  and arrive both in school and at their homes  very late . This in convinces  the start morning lessons and undone home work. We are trying to find some sponsors who can help us buy a bus which can help in transporting these children. Both Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation and the parents fraternity are really making frantic effort to find one.

I hope this report will focus some figurative picture  of the conditions of the Tegla Loroupe Peace School  is undergoing.

Tegla Loroupe Peace Race in Italy

Since 2005 the Tegla Loroupe Peace Race is also international. In Salo the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation Italy organises a 10 km race benefiting children in Italy and in Kenya.

Today was held the 7th Edition of the "Camminata per la Pace e per la Vita" in Salo.

And Tegla came especially for this race to Italy. Gianni Lombardi, organiser of the race has together with his Italian friends, constructed the kitchen at the Tegla Loroupe Peace school.

600,000 people have been displaced (IDP = Internally displaced people).

Eröffnung der Tegla Loroupe Peace Akdemie

Die Tegla Loroupe Friedens-Akademie ist eine Modell-Schule, die Tegla Loroupe in den Jahren 2005 bis 2010 gebaut hatte auch mit der Unterstützung verschiedener Spender aus der Schweiz. Bildungsmöglichkeiten für HIV-Waisen und kriegsvertriebene Kinder der Gemeinden in der weiten ländlichen Gegenden des Horns von Afrika gibt es fast keine. Durch die Eröffnung der Schule wird den Kindern eine Chancen für das Leben eröffnet und damit sichergestellt, dass sie nicht zur verbreiteten Praxis des Viehdiebstahls zurückkehren werden.

Der 16. Dezember markiert einen wichtigen Tag in dem Aufbau der Schule, als an diesem Tag erstmals 189 Kinder ausgewählt wurden, die in den nächsten Jahren die Möglichkeit erhalten, in die Schule gehen zu können. Der Schulbeginn ist am 2. Januar 2012

Children of KidsX support our partners in Kenya

On September 12, 2010 a special sports day for children was held in Heiden, Switzerland: KidsX - the event visualized by  Olivier Bernhard (world-class triathlon champion) was organized by Paul Gruber, in cooperation with the World Harmony Run Switzerland (www.worldharmonyrun.org) and local teachers and many volunteers from the region of Heiden.

The occasion was the centenary of Henry Dunant's death (1828–1910).  Dunant  was the 1^st Nobel peace laureate (1901) as in 1859 he had organized a group of volunteers to aid the wounded during a battle in Lombardy, Italy, when French and Italian troops under French emperor Napoleon III fought against the Austrian troops. Shortly after Dunant was part of the founding members  of the Red Cross in 1863.

Carl Lewis sent a recorded message to the children expressing and reassuring the children of his full inner support of the whole event. And Tegla Loroupe was running with the first group of the 300 children participating.

Ruth Schäfer, eine einfache Kassiererin aus dem Rheintal verliess die Schweiz um Tausenden von Kenianern eine medizinische Betreuung, Wasser und Notverpflegung zu ermöglichen. Bürgerkriegsähnliche Zustände im 2008 veranlasste die Schweizer Botschaft alle Schweizer in Kenia auszufliegen; Mama Matata, wie die Kenianer Ruth, die "Mutter, welche Probleme löst", nennen, blieb. Ruth: „Wer soll sich sonst um die Ärmsten der Armen kümmern?“

2009 hat sich die Lage in Kenia noch weiter zugespitzt:

Dürre und Hunger in Kenia

Seit Monaten sind im ostafrikanischen Land 10 Millionen Menschen von einer grossen Hungersnot betroffen. Denn in Kenia herrscht eine anhaltende Dürre: Seit drei Jahren regnet es kaum. Deshalb vertrocknen viele Pflanzen und die Menschen können nicht genügend zum Essen ernten. Normalerweise ernähren sich die Menschen in Kenia viel von Mais - doch jetzt sind die Felder völlig verdorrt.

Es kommen immer mehr ITP’s, auch Einheimische die unter Hunger leiden um mich zu fragen, ob wir ihnen helfen können. Wir brauchen Eure Unterstützung um Geld zu sammeln, damit ich mit dem Geld, das gesammelt wird den armen Menschen Essen kaufen kann. Was soll ich machen? Soll ich sie fortschicken? Die wenigen Lebensmittel die man noch bekommt sind um dass fünf-fache gestiegen!
Im Moment müssen viele Kühe notgeschlachtet werden, wegen Wassermangel, der bei uns am Spital „Gott sei Dank“ noch nicht eingetreten ist, da wir eigenes Wasser besitzen.

Es lief mir kalt den Rücken runter als ich die TV Bilder und Zeitungen sah. Ebenfalls bei der täglichen Fahrt zum Spital sehe ich die Bilder live. Tausende von Kühen werden mit Lastwagen zu einem Massenloch gefahren manche auch noch getrieben die dann unterwegs zusammenbrechen und sterben. Sie bestehen nur noch aus Haut und Knochen. Doch auch die Bevölkerung ist nicht besser dran; in vielen Gegenden wird um die letzte Nahrung und das Wasser gestritten und getötet.
Ja sogar Kinder und Mütter werden regelrecht abgeschlachtet weil der Hunger zu gross ist und jeder überleben will. Es ist zum Weinen - ganz, ganz schlimm.
Im Saburu-Gebiet wurden 29 Einheimische (Bokot) auf eine bestialisch brutale Art umgebracht.

Doch der Hunger herrscht auch bei uns und es ist schwer einen vollen Bauch zu haben und die Leute abzuweisen. Es ist ein ständiger Kampf; doch ich habe ja letztes Jahr schon gesagt dass wir eine grosse Hungersnot bekommen werden. Doch dass der Regen nicht oder auch nicht mehr (Klimawandel?) kommen will beschwört ein Desaster herauf.
Stellt Euch mal vor, ich habe in meinem Garten wo es ja genügend Wasser gibt ein Loch ausgebuddelt das fast drei Meter tief ist und die Erde ist bis tief in den Boden nur Staub. Wie will da jetzt noch der Regen helfen, geschweige denn etwas wachsen?

Ja meine lieben Menschen zuhause ich wünsche Euch eine gute Zeit, ein schönes Wochenende, bis bald und hoffe auf Eure Unterstützung für die Ärmsten dieser Welt und vor allem die vielen Kinder und Mütter die hier so sehr leiden und denkt daran heute ist der Welt-Kindertag und vergesst mir diese Kinder nicht, die Euch jetzt so dringend brauchen und auf Euer gutes Herz hoffen.

Our 1st project in Kenya: Tegla Loroupe Peace Academy

TEGLA LOROUPE PEACE ACADEMY (TLPA) www.teglapeacefoundation.org

Tegla Loroupe Peace Academy comprises of a boarding primary and secondary schools, sports stadium, athletics training camp, health centre and staff quarters. This Academy will offer Educational facilities to children displaced and / or orphaned as a result of conflict and HIV Aids The school will draw students the border areas of the Greater Horn of Africa which include Northern Kenya, North Eastern Uganda, Ethiopia and Southern Sudan and Somalia. The reason for this is that it will act as a Peace building institution.
VISION / MISSION OF TEGLA LOROUPE PEACE ACADEMY
The vision of TLPA is to provide educational opportunities for children displaced and or orphaned as a result of conflict and /or HIV Aids in the Greater Horn of Africa Region

Project objectives
The TLPA seeks to achieve the following objectives:
a) to offer educational opportunities to children displaces and or orphaned by conflict and HIV/AIDS in the pastoral communities of the GHA
b) to enable the children unlearn the war values and the enemy attitude by mixing children from various warring communities and nations
c) to offer a peace education curriculum as part of its overall teaching curriculum
d) give parents from various warring communities interact through visitation to school to see their children
e) provide training facility for the talented youth from these communities who hope develop or pursue a career in professional sporting eg athletics, soccer and other sports

Project site
Tegla Loroupe peace academy is located in west Pokot District. The location of the Academy is in a highland with regular rainfall. This site was deliberately taken because of high altitude. The Academy will comprise other than primary school and secondary schools, a sports stadium, athletics training camp, a health centre. Athletes need high altitude for training.(rainfall data required).
1.6 Project design
The TLPA is divided into three phases

Phase one:
The first phase consists of a mixed Primary Boarding School (Double stream), a library and a small health facility for the Academy as well as the community. The TLPA will function as a rescue – school where girls can take refuge to get protection. They will however, not be able to pay their fees, as they will be outcasts in their families with no one to be able to support them. If TLPA gets sponsorship scheme, these girls will be given high priority.

Phase two:
This phase consists of a mixed boarding Secondary school.

Phase three;
This will consist of a sports training facility to be used in the development of sports in the region. It will also give warriors the chance of exchanging their guns for a sports training kit then develop their talent. However, the philosophy of creation of sports facility in the academy is due to the fact that sports is a connector while removing the differences between races, the rich and the poor as well as gender considerations.

Heute abend waren der Gründer des Rhein-Valley Hospitals Stephan Holderegger und seine Partnerin und Leiterin des Spitals, Ruth Schäfer (Mama Matata), live bei Hugi Bigi im Zürcher Lokal-TV "Tele Züri" zu Gast und konnten über die Lage in Kenya informieren. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass viele Zuschauer inspiriert wurden, sich auch finanziell zu engagieren, denn z.Z. sind wieder dringend Gelder nötig, um die Unkosten zu tragen.

Tonight Stephan Holderegger (founder of the Rhein-Valley Hospital) and director Ruth Schäfer (Mama Matata) were live at Hugo Bigi's popular Talk-Show at "Tele-Züri" (Local TV station in Zurich). They could speak about the situation and their work in Kenya and made clear that donations are still crucial for the survival of the hospital in Nakuru.

The Rhein - Valley Hospital in Nakuru-Kasambara opened in 2004 and is directed by Ruth Schäfer of Switzerland. The hospital relies solely on donations for buying food and medicine for the poor and suffering locals. Moreover, all funds are used directly for patient care. Every year thousands of people visit the hospital for medical help and nowadays also for food and shelter.

Die Spitalleiterin Ruth Schäfer hilft hungernden Flüchtlingen in Kenia mit Wasser und Essen (Slideshow => auf Bild klicken)

Als Kenia im Januar 2008 unter blutigen Stammeskriegen leidet und die Schweizer Botschaft die Evakuierung aller Schweizer anordnet, hart die Appenzellerin Ruth Schäfer, Spitalleiterin des Schweizer Spitales in Nakuru, trotz grosser Lebensgefahr aus.
Ohne ihr Bleiben hätten mehrere Tausend Flüchtlinge während Monaten nichts Richtiges zu essen gehabt. Mit ihrem Einsatz hat sie auch andere humanitäre Aktionen inspiriert. Die ersten von Ruth Schäfer inspirierten Notsendungen aus der Schweiz erreichten Kenia im Feb 2008. Vom Radio DRS wurde Ruth Schäfer 2008 mit dem „Prix Courage“ ausgezeichnet. „Mama Matata“ (Mutter Problem), wie die Kenianer die Schweizerin liebevoll aber auch mit etwas Angst nennen, lässt sich von Behördenwillkür und auch gewaltsamen Überfällen nicht vom Dienst den Ärmsten gegenüber abhalten.
Doch die humanitäre Arbeit geht bei Ruth Schäfer auch 2009 weiter: Gestern versenkte sie bei 55 Grad und trotz Sandsturm Wassertanks im Boden und stellte WC's auf, um den Menschen im Flüchtlingslager bei Nakuru (Kenia) das Überleben zu erleichtern. Durch anhaltende politische Unruhen und die Dürrezeit sind zur Zeit in Kenia 10 Millionen Menschen vom Hungerstod bedroht.

Our Kids to Kids partner in Kenya, the Rhein-Valley Hospital was proud that Ex-Miss Switzerland Amanda Ammann visited their place and could witness what is being done daily. She also helped them while she was there and took care of some young patients (see pictures in German article). There were also a report on this visit in the Swiss weekly magazine "Schweizer Illustrierte" as well as in the daily paper "20minuten".

«Es war eindrucksvoll und zugleich schockierend», so Ammann. «Die Menschen dort brauchen dringend Hilfe und werden nicht einmal von der eigenen Regierung unterstützt.» Umso mehr beeindruckt zeigt sie sich vom Engagement der Spitalleiterin Ruth Schäfer. Die Schweizerin wird in ihrer Wahl­heimat liebevoll Mama Matata genannt und versucht seit Jahren, das Leid in der von Hunger geplagten Gegend zu mindern – auf ehrenamtlicher Basis. «Eine Heldentat», schwärmt Ammann und fügt hinzu: «Mama Matata ist ein Mensch mit einem riesengrossen Herz – und gleichzeitig auch die taffste Frau, die ich kenne.»

10 Millionen Menschen hungern in Kenia

Ruth Schäfer vom Rhein-Valley Hospital bittet Sie um ihre Hilfe!

Vielleicht erinnern Sie sich: Am 6. Januar 2008 nach den Präsidentschaftswahlen brach in Kenia ein Bürgerkrieg mit über 1000 Toten aus. Ruth Schäfer nahm im Schweizer Rhein-Valley Hospital in Nakuru 7000 Flüchtlinge auf, welche während Monaten dank Spenden aus der Schweiz ernährt werden konnten.

Letzte Woche erhielten wir von Ruth Schäfer den folgenden dringenden Aufruf:
Zehn Millionen Kenyaner hungern. Präsident Kibaki hat den Notstand ausgerufen

Unser Rhein-Valley Spital hier in Kenia unterstützte 7500 ITP.s (Vertriebene) während des ganzen letzten Jahres. Ohne Hilfe der Schweizer währe es uns aber nicht möglich gewesen, da von Seiten des Kenianischen Roten Kreuzes und von der Regierung keine Hilfe kam. Ich und mein Team versuchten dass Bestmögliche zu tun, um wenigsten unsere ITP’s ein kleines Startgeld zu geben, damit sie sich für zwei Monate Verpflegung konnten. Ich freute mich sogar dass es einige schafften, von Ihrer Ernte Gemüse zu verkaufen.

Seit der neuen Hungersnot und Wasserknappheit erreichen mich täglich Hilferufe unserer ITP’s. Was sie gesetzt hatten, verdörrte und selbst kleinen Einnahmen blieben aus. Immer mehr der ITP’s kommen zurück und bitten unseren Spital, wo Sie nach dem Bürgerkrieg fast 10 Monate gelebt hatten.. Kinder und Erwachsene haben keine Esswaren mehr. Sie leben von Wasser und von Baumfrüchten, die aber nicht geniessbar sind und so enden sie als Patienten in unserem Spital.

Was macht die Regierung? Anstatt der Bevölkerung Nahrung abzugeben, wird über neue Strassen, Bürogebäude und einen neuen Flughafen diskutiert. Viel Mais wurde ins Ausland verkauft, sodass für die Hungernden nicht einmal mehr genug übrig geblieben ist. Auch beim Kenianischen Roten Kreuz, die Häuser waren zwar bis oben voll mit Lebensmittel, gesponsert von Europa, den USA und Japan. Anstatt das Essen heraus zu geben, verkauften den Mais an reiche Kenianer. Vor zwei Monaten stand das Rhein-Valley Hospital auf der Essensliste beim Roten Kreuz auf der Liste doch die unsere Liste wurde einfach abgestempelt mit „ausgeliefert“ und das Essen bekamen wir nie.

Auch die politische Lage spitzt sich wieder zu: arme Leute, die unzufrieden sind, Lehrer die die Schulen boykottieren, geplagt mit Hunger im Bauch, kein Geld, kein Haus über dem Kopf und die eigenen Kindern die sie Hungern sehen. Neben diesem Elend, die Regierung die nicht reagiert, sie bleibt einfach ruhig und lässt die Leute alleine Wursteln und Sterben. Ich frage mich wie lange es wohl gehen wird.
